How to achieve individual goals in VUCA times: Investigating the literature.

10:55 AM - 11:15 AM

Promotional description

How does our increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world impact our individual goal achievement? Dramatically, the very year before COVID-19 hit there was an explosion of scientific research into what makes an expert and how they achieve greatness. It was considered a complex puzzle and there was a ground swell of pressure to discover what the pieces were and how they worked together. And then Covid-19 hit, and the world shut down, also shutting down – or at the least stunting – achievements world-wide. How has COVID-19 changed our desires, abilities, and opportunities to achieve? Enjoy a lively romp through the fascinating history of work engagement, self-regulation, performance, goal setting and achievement in the organisational psychology literature, by a passionate researcher, achiever, and registered practicing organisational psychologist. This presentation will bring you up to speed, or refresh you on the basics, and inspire your interest in this fascinating area. Learn the discoveries made about performance and achievement since COVID-19. Gain an understanding of the added complexity it brings. Become up-to-date and consider future directions being recommended.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this event, attendees will be able to have knowledge of:
• why goal setting and achievement is important to individuals
• terminology and definitions of constructs and leading researchers in the fields of performance, self-regulation, work engagement, goal setting and achievement.
• the ways these constructs operate, the principles and generalizations, of the theories.
• of the effects of VUCA and COVID-19 on performance and goal achievement.
Attendees will be receiving: passively paying attention. Receiving is about the student's memory and recognition as well.
Attendees will be responding: actively participating in the learning process, not only attending also reacting by adding to an electronic chat stream (if available). I am adept at responding to chat at the end and, if more relevant, during presentations. They will also respond during question time.
