Knowing me, knowing you: Board directors influencing through identity work

2:00 PM - 2:20 PM

Promotional description

In the uncertain times we are living through, company boards need to draw on a wider range of expertise, which increasingly includes a depth of knowledge and experience of human capital issues. Yet, direct access to boards to better understand their behaviour and the use of expertise in the decision-making process is difficult. In this research project, storytelling and the use of identity is used to understand when and how board members with human capital expertise step forward to influence their board colleagues towards taking these perspectives into account in board decision making.

This is a relevant topic for organisational psychologists as there is an increasing interest in how we can contribute to helping boards to be more effective. For all those with expertise in human capital area it is a demonstration of how our voices can be heard around the boardroom table.

Learning outcomes

• Understand alternate perspectives on identity in the context of company directors
• Appreciate subtle cues in language used in storytelling.
• Describe how board directors can use identity to influence board decisions.
• Recognise the contribution those with human capital expertise can make to the boardroom.
