The effects of hybrid work choices and worker needs on employee wellbeing

3:00 PM - 3:20 PM

Promotional description

Most full-time employees would prefer to work a certain number of days from either home or the office. But what happens when these preferences are not met? In this study, we investigate whether a discrepancy between employees' preferred and actual number of days working from home has an impact on psychological wellbeing. We also examine whether the impact of this discrepancy is worse for employees whose needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence are not fulfilled by their working situation. Our study setting is unique, as it is conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic when most employees are working from home more often than they would prefer.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this event, attendees will be able to:
* Understand the effects of discrepancy between desired versus actual working from home arrangements on psychological well-being
* Apply insights from this presentation to design work-from-home policies to maximise employees' wellbeing

Paul has over 30 years of industry experience working in Banking and Finance, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Retail, Logistics, Utilities and Management Consulting. Operating at senior levels, Paul sought a deeper understanding of human cognition and behaviour to apply in his people leadership roles by undertaking undergraduate and Honours studies in Psychological Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology. He is now embarking on PhD studies to further his credentials. At the onset of the COVID pandemic in 2020, Paul led a team of 200+ people at a large financial organisation through a significant workplace location change, pivoting overnight to working from home and then developing a hybrid-working cadence when COVID restrictions eased. Noticing variations in wellbeing and self-determination needs in his colleagues, Paul subsequently conducted research in his workplace in 2021 to measure the effects of hybrid work choices and worker needs on employee wellbeing.
