IWO Psychology: Australian experiences, our future, and global perspectives

11:20 AM - 12:45 PM

Promotional description

The leading international IWO Psychology organisations (the Alliance for Organizational Psychology, and the International Association of Applied Psychology) have created a 'Declaration of Identity' to allow the profession to share a more globally inclusive identity and to raise the visibility of the profession. Senior representatives from both of these bodies will provide a pre-recorded section to commence this symposium.

Two of the presenters (Macqueen and Machin) have described how IWOP is perceived in the Australian context in a recent book chapter with the goal of increasing interest in IWOP among students and providing inspiring narratives from leading Australian IWO Psychologists. Two such individuals will talk about their career journey. Macqueen and Machin also reflect on the employment prospects for IWO Psychologists in Australia with average growth projected. The value of IWOP must be reinforced to political and business leaders, educational institutions, and the public. (116 words).

The session will encourage participant and presenter discussion of issues.

Learning outcomes

This symposium provides insights and learning outcomes for all participants.

The session will demonstrate the benefits of considering local personalised narratives together with data trends and perceptions from overseas. Discussion will include the competencies required of future IWO psychologists in Australia, and which may be relevant more broadly e.g., Aotearoa/NZ.

Attendees are expected to engage, ask questions and respond.

The inspiring narratives from experienced Australian IWOPs provide a core element in the IWOP chapter in the Australian Handbook of Careers in Psychological Science. At least two (from the eight which are in the Handbook) will present at IOP 2022. This is complemented by a presentation by Tony Machin, the recipient of the 2021 APS Distinguished Contribution to Psychology Education Award, discussing possible career paths.

A presentation from two leading IWO psychologists from overseas enhances and broadens our perspective of possibilities within our profession, and the opportunities and challenges we face.
