The rise of the Chief Psychological Health Officer: Organisational Psychologists stepping up to the challenge

10:20 AM - 12:10 PM

Promotional description

Organisations have a growing focus on enhancing employee mental health and wellbeing. Recent shifts in the regulatory environment for managing psychosocial risks places a stronger onus on organisations to go beyond responsive supports, policy and training to adopting a systems approach to sustainable change. Understanding and modifying job design factors to address the underlying causes of psychological injury has become key. Traditional WH&S processes and clinical individual support mechanisms are no longer sufficient to meet this challenge.

This has prompted an increase in demand for in-house specialist psychologist roles such as Chief Psychological Health Officer or Chief Mental Health Officer. These roles demand an integration of organisational development and leadership expertise, change management and implementation expertise, data analytics and evaluation skills, as well as an understanding of risk management and health and safety management systems. Organisational psychologists are uniquely positioned to meet this demand with their understanding of organisational systems that impact on psychological health and wellbeing together with their foundational expertise as psychologists in mental health.
