Thriving isn’t the absence of unwellness: translating this into proactive interventions.

Hertzberg’s work on hygienes and motivators promoted the idea that the absence of those the things that demotivate us, doesn’t mean that we are motivated. More recently we are being encouraged to reconsider this as a meta theory in relation to the realm of positive psychology (Sachau, 2007).

In the same way, does the absence of the things that make us psychosocially unwell make us well, and what is the relationship of wellness to “Thriving” (Su, Tay & Diener 2014)? This organisational case study, initially seeks to present findings from a qualitative analysis, exploring relevant forces affecting this relationship in practise. It concludes with an insight into how an alliance between Health and Safety and Leadership Development is playing out inside an organisation intending to differentiate itself within the mental health domain.

Michelle left her internal role as Global Development Lead and Principal Psychologist at BHP in 1998 to start her family. Months later she opened her own independent consultancy, Leadership & Learning. She has partnered with organisations like Cranfield University (UK), PwC, BHP Billiton, Alfred Health, Department of Education, McKinsey, and AGSM. She completed a Masters in Social Impact in 2019, receiving a humanitarian scholarship. She provides strategic and applied advice on leadership, social impact, ethics, organisational culture, and development. In 2019 she was part of the judging panel for the APS, Workplace Excellence Awards and presented at the International Society for the Study of Psychoanalysis in Organisations (ISPSO) at their annual symposium in New York. Her paper Back to the Future (2020) was featured in the Journal of Socioanalysis this year. She currently works with Aurecon leading their strategy to thrive.

Sam De Vries is a Senior Learning Design Consultant at Aurecon, a multinational Engineering, Design and Advisory firm. Sam works as part of Aurecon’s Learning, Talent and Leadership team to design developmental experiences which create the conditions for individual and organisational growth. Alongside her role at Aurecon, Sam is currently completing her Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced) at Monash University, with the ambition of becoming an organisational psychologist.
