Vertical leadership: growing potential to lead in uncertain, complex and ambiguous times

11:45 AM - 12:45 PM

Promotional description

How do we help leaders meet the complex challenges they face? How do we support people to grow their leadership potential prior to stepping into leadership roles? How can we stretch leaders to grow bigger minds, so they respond well to the adaptive challenges leading inevitably presents? How can leader’s grow workplace culture and create flourishing spaces between people?

This workshop explores the edge of leadership development practice and the move toward a vertical development approach. Vertical development requires leaders to take stock of their inner world and the patterns within an organisation’s culture and systems. This workshop will explain not only the theory of vertical development but also give participants a taste of the practice through a simulated vertical leadership development experience.

The practical value of a vertical development model of leadership lies in its premise that sustained leadership development comes from an integrated focus on the individual and collective realms of experience. Drawing on Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, leadership development is a knitting together of an individuals’ inner leadership with their outer behaviours and responses. It also encompasses the collective domain of organisation culture and context; and the system in which an organisation operates.

Learning outcomes

This workshop is designed for those interested in human development and growing people’s potential to lead in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world. The workshop learning can apply to those interested in growing leadership capability in those who are in formal leadership roles as well as those who are informal leaders.

From participating in this workshop learners will be able to:
• distinguish between vertical and horizontal development of leaders and
how that applies within leadership program design and delivery
• understand a vertical development approach to adult development
• experience the qualities of vertical leadership learning through a simulated
activity
• experience the difference between individual and collective vertical learning

The workshop invites participants to self-reflect and be open to share with other participants in response to the workshop activities. However, no one will be required to share anything that they are not comfortable sharing.
