Improving diversity in recruitment - Lessons from practice

11:20 AM - 3:20 PM

Promotional description

This workshop focuses on building participants’ capability to implement the recruitment and selection elements of an organizational Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) strategy. Facilitated by psychologists and HR practitioners with extensive experience in DEI and recruitment, the workshop is structured around two case studies. One case study addresses legal recruitment at Ashurst LLP, recipient of the UK Social Mobility Awards Recruitment Program of the Year and the Australasian Law Awards Diversity Initiative of the Year. In an industry dominated by white male graduates from exclusive universities, the workshop explores Ashurst’s success in increasing the proportion of low SES applicants, women, and Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islanders. The second case study focuses on firefighter recruitment at Fire and Rescue NSW. Through multiple initiatives this agency increased the proportion of female firefighters appointed to more than 1 in 5 and achieved a 22% increase in culturally diverse appointees. This case study also examines DEI initiatives in the context of public-sector merit-based selection legislation. Both case studies are explored through a DEI maturity model and a multilevel model of change readiness. Participants will leave the workshop with an increased knowledge of DEI recruitment practices and evidence-based approaches to implementation and evaluation.

Learning outcomes

At the close of the workshop participants will be able to:

1. Identify and describe recruitment and selection-focused initiatives used in DEI strategies.

2. Understand the legal issues involved in recruitment and selection-focused DEI initiatives, including claims of “reverse discrimination”.

3. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment and selection-focused DEI initiatives, based on research evidence and the applicability of initiatives to specific organizational contexts.

4. Understand best-practice strategies for building organisational and leadership support for DEI initiatives.

5. Design recruitment and selection focused DEI initiatives in response to organizational vignettes reflecting a variety of organizational contexts.

Assessment of the initiatives will occur through activities in which participants work in small groups to evaluate the DEI initiatives used in the case studies, and a final activity in which groups of participants will produce suggested DEI initiatives in response to a novel case study described in an organizational vignette.
