The effects of expert / Referent power on knowledge sharing and hiding

2:10 PM - 2:30 PM

Promotional description

Why do some employees openly share what they know, whereas others are more reluctant and even conceal their relevant expertise? In this study, we investigated how employees' expectations about potential gains and losses in reputation would influence their willingness to share knowledge. We looked at reputation in terms of expert power (the extent to which a person is relied upon for their knowledge) and referent power (the extent to which a person is liked and respected by colleagues). We found that either expected gains *or* losses in both forms of power decreased the willingness of people to share knowledge.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this event, attendees will be able to:
* Understand the concepts of expert and referent power
* Understand how the combination of the two influences employees' willingness to share knowledge
* Understand the optimal situation whereby knowledge exchange is optimised.
