The Assessment of Learning: Where are we up to?
Abstract
The Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory of cognitive abilities is considered by many scholars in the field to provide the most accurate representation of the structure of human cognitive abilities currently available. CHC, and the associated method of Cross-Battery Assessment (XBA), has significantly impacted the way in which psychologists conduct psycho-educational assessments for the purposes of understanding individual students unique learning needs.
Workshop Learning Outcome(s)
After providing a brief overview of the history of CHC and XBA, this half-day workshop will:
Outline recent updates to the model and discuss implications for the practice of psycho-educational assessment
Compare, contrast and explore the debate around the two prominent models for the identification of students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD): Response to Intervention (RTI) and Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW)
Illustrate how the WIAT-III and WJ IV ACH can be used to operationalise DSM5 SLD Criteria A and B
Demonstrate how the Cross-Battery Assessment Software System (XBASS) can be used to interpret and report the results of a XBA via the presentation of case studies.
