Early Years Social Emotional Learning – What, Why, How? The success of cross-culture adaptation of the COPE-Resilience preschool SEL program

3:00 PM - 3:20 PM

Abstract

Social-emotional development is of growing interest to researchers and practitioners due to its positive impact on children’s later mental health, well-being, school readiness and life success. In recent year, internationally, parents, educators, and policymakers are increasingly being encouraged to implement evidence-based explicit universal social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in schools and kindergartens. It is particularly important to consider the cross-culture utility of SEL programs when implementing with diverse students; COPE-Resilience is one such explicit universal social and emotional learning (SEL) program designed for preschool children. Following four years of research and practice in Australia, the COPE-Resilience program has found to enhance children’s social and emotional skills. This presentation will focus on the cross-cultural adaptation and implementation of the COPE-Resilience program in Taiwan; the cross-cultural considerations in designing, teaching and evaluating the COPE-R program will be discussed. In addition to evaluating the program’s efficacy, the current presentation also explores how culture, age and the quality of implementation impact the effectiveness of the program with applications in both Australia and Taiwanese settings.
