Working with children who have a non-binary gender: Developmental and educational needs
1:00 PM - 1:20 PMAbstract
A growing body of clinically-based material is available for understanding the mental health needs of binary transgender children (i.e., transgender children whose gender is male or female). The needs of non-binary children (i.e., children who do not have a binary gender) are, however, much less often attended to. Drawing on the author's clinical work with non-binary children, and the small but growing body of literature that explores the lives of non-binary adults, this talk will outline key points that clinicians may productively engage with in terms of meeting the mental health needs of non-binary children and their parents. Specifically, the talk will explore how to understand gender development beyond binaries, the needs of non-binary children in educational contexts, and the specific clinical issues that non-binary children may present with and to which informed and affirming clinicians may usefully respond.
