Teens and their screens: Building resilience for the digital world

2:30 PM - 2:50 PM

Abstract

This paper summarises the findings from a review of the evidence on young people’s social and emotional wellbeing online and proposes a new approach that can mitigate online risks and allow young people to acquire the skills they need to navigate their digital lives. Over the past decade, young people’s use of the internet and social media has significantly increased. The rapid growth of portable devices such as mobile phones, tablets and gaming consoles continues to shape young people’s relationships with the online world. The evidence outlined in this review demonstrates the very real impact that the digital world can have on young people’s mental health and wellbeing. It also looks at new and emerging digital risks that young people now face. Specifically, the role that digital resilience can play is highlighted in how risks are perceived, encountered and responded to. This paper suggests that in addition to raising awareness about online risks and increasing online protection, there is a need to suppor young people to build their digital resilience, so that they are prepared for the technological future that faces them. Importantly, this paper provides some valuable indications of how young people can be better supported to acquire the online coping skills to manage digital risks, and the actions required by families, schools, and professionals working with young people.
