Implementing Trauma-Informed Practice in Education: An illustrative example of school-wide trauma specific interventions
2:30 PM - 2:50 PMAbstract
A myriad of research demonstrates the links between experiences of trauma and emotional, behavioral and learning challenges in children and adolescents. Evidence is now emerging that highlights schools as critical systems to deliver support and interventions to address the effects of childhood trauma. MacKillop Education’s Rethinking Learning and Teaching Environments (RELATE) Model is a holistic, multitiered, trauma-informed and responsive school change approach. RELATE draws upon the credentials of The Sanctuary Model, a theory-based, trauma-informed systems approach that facilitates organizational culture change. Within the context of a trauma-responsive educational environment, MacKillop Education implement school-wide trauma specific interventions to students with emotional and behavioural disorders that have been classified as needing high levels of adjustment in education. The trauma-informed school perspective is informed by the theoretical orientations of trauma and attachment theory, developmental psychology, neuroscience, systems theory and relational pedagogy. Trauma specific interventions occurred across both primary and secondary classes (N = 70) for a duration of 4 years. Results indicate strong measurable growth in student wellbeing and learning, alongside significant decreases in critical incidents. Illustrative case studies reveal improvements in student’s safety and self-regulation capabilities. These findings align with studies conducted in comparable schools in the US. The role that school psychologists play in the implementation of the model is discussed in addition to the utility of the model in mainstream schools and the generalizability to young people with significant psychological needs.
