Abstract

Building and evaluating inclusive community coalitions for equity and justice

This proposed workshop is designed to apply principles of equity and justice to build and evaluate inclusive community coalitions. It includes evaluation approaches; the rationale for building coalitions from the ground up; coalition dynamics; coalition frameworks and guiding principles; and how to incorporate equity and justice principles into the evaluation. Frameworks will include to commonly used models - Community Coalition Action Theory (Butterfoss & Kegler, 2002) and Collective Impact (Kania and Kramer, 2011). Principles include Collaborative Solutions (Wolff, 2010), and the Principles for Collaborating for Equity and Justice (Wolff, et al., 2016). The content will draw on the scholarly literature and the presenter’s vast experience to provide examples of how theory translates to practice. The presenter will share resources and practical solutions. The workshop will be interactive with table talk topics and small and large group discussions.

Learning Outcomes:
Attendees will learn:
1. How to use Utilization Focused and Principles Focused evaluation methods with theoretical frameworks and equity and justice principles to build and evaluate coalitions and collaboratives.
2. Stages of development and measurement levels.
3. Challenges to building and evaluating coalitions and strategies to overcome them.
4. Best practices that can be applied to ensure success.

1. Objectives and Introductions (to include experience with coalitions)
2. Evaluation approaches – Utilization Focused Evaluation with Principles Focused Evaluation
3. Definitions, Frameworks and Principles – Community Coalition Action Theory, Collective Impact, Collaborative Solutions, Equity and Justice Principles.
4. Coalition developmental stages
5. Levels / focus of evaluation (including some tools)
6. Coalition challenges and how to overcome them
7. Using data with coalitions
8. Best practices to ensure success
9. Resources and Wrap-Up

The workshop presenter will also provide participants with an extensive list of additional resources and readings. Concepts will be introduced, information provided, and participants will engage in interactive exercises to apply what they learn.
