Details

Recognising the connections between health and rehabilitation psychology, this workshop, introduced by Diana Dorstyn, aims to enhance your understanding of and practice in a range of approaches to working with clients experience of pain. Three workshop presenters will then focus on their respective specialist areas of expertise in contributing to a BIO –PSYCHO-SOCIAL approach to therapeutic work with pain management. A physiotherapist (Tom Alder) providing an introduction to physiological explanations (and client education) of pain, physical treatments and client adherence to practice exercises. A clinical psychologist (Liana Taylor) providing an explanation of mindfulness and related interventions tailored to managing/relieving pain experience. A counselling psychologist (John Alder) will introduce the basis for inclusion of the clients primary partner (spouse) in therapy and pain management practices.

Biography

Tom Alder, Corporate Health Group is an early career physiotherapist with a passion for helping people people suffering persistent pain. He currently works in a private setting as part of a multi-disciplinary team, applying the latest research in pain science to achieve goals for his clients.

Biography

Liana Taylor is a clinical psychologist, and international mindfulness teacher. Based in Adelaide, Liana offers world class training and certification for health professionals across Australia at the Australian Institute of Applied Mindfulness. She works with the mind to soothe overwhelm, pain and distress, and build inner calm, clarity and self-compassion to awaken new possibilities in professional and personal lives. Bringing forth 25 years’ experience in clinical psychology, relationship therapy, leadership development, teaching and lecturing, Liana utilises tools from neuroscience, positive psychology, clinical and coaching practice and mindfulness/meditation/ contemplative traditions to deliver sessions that are down to earth, practical and action rich.

Biography

John Alder began his professional work as a secondary school teacher, then undertook counsellor training and started working as a counsellor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1979. Following 10 years as a counsellor in tertiary education he lectured in psychology for 15 years, alongside a private practice. John has interests in rehabilitation counselling, marriage counselling and the supervision of psychologists.
