Utilising telehealth to provide neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation services: opportunities and challenges
2:00 PM - 3:00 PMSummary
Recent advances in the field of telecommunication technology has opened up opportunities to utilise telehealth within clinical practice. Telehealth is increasingly being used by numerous medical and allied health disciplines, with good success. In Australia, relatively few neuropsychologists exist, and those who are engaged in clinical practice tend to reside in metropolitan areas. This results in significant unmet for people with brain impairment in rural and remote regions. Utilising telehealth within neuropsychology has the potential to address this need; however, to date very few clinicians are using telehealth and there is limited evidence to guide clinical practice.
This symposium will be of particular interest to clinicians and researchers who are interested in utilising telehealth methods to improve patient access to neuropsychology services. We will showcase a number of innovative clinical research projects demonstrating the potential to deliver a range of neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation services using telehealth, across a range of Australian clinical settings and neurological populations.

David Lawson is currently completing a clinical doctorate in neuropsychology with Monash University. He combines lived experience of stroke with clinical training and a dedicated interest in research around stroke rehabilitation and outcomes. His doctoral research investigates the effectiveness of telehealth delivery for a memory rehabilitation intervention following stroke, and the experience of telehealth for both stroke survivors and clinicians. He is also coordinating projects in eHealth memory rehabilitation interventions with La Trobe University, and unmet needs in the young stroke community with the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.
