2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Summary

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a condition thought to affect approximately 6% of people over the age of 80. The condition involves changes in gait, urinary continence, and cognitive decline, mostly in the areas of psychomotor speed and attention. When NPH is suspected, neuropsychologists may be called upon to complete assessments before and after lumbar-puncture-tap-tests to clarify diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis of NPH is critical, as symptoms can be reversed or reduced with insertion of a brain shunt. Much of the research in the area has focused on changes in gait, but neglected issues pertaining to cognitive assessment. Specifically, insensitive measures such as the MMSE have typically been reported in the literature. Other literature has used more thorough cognitive assessment, however, consideration has rarely been given to test-retest reliability or practice effects.

The session will explore the clinical features, assessment and diagnosis of NPH. There will also be an opportunity for broader examination of professional and ethical issues. Transferable skills developed within this session will be applicable to any context in which test selection, reliability, sensitivity, specificity and practice effects are of clinical relevance.
