The Influence of Subjective Cognitive Decline on Prospective Memory over Five Years

12:10 PM - 12:30 PM

Summary

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is becoming an important area of research within older adult populations. One area of particular importance for daily life is prospective memory (PM). Performance appears to vary depending on how and where PM is measured – including whether it is self-report or objective, and whether it is measured in an experimental or naturalistic setting. Investigation of SCD and PM in older adults will contribute to the understanding of age-related changes in everyday memory abilities. Furthermore, comparison of PM performance in different settings will clarify whether performance across different constructs of PM are consistent, and direct future measure selection. Ninety-nine community-dwelling older adults were revisited after five to six years, to examine the role of SCD on single-event and habitual naturalistic PM performance. Results indicated older adults with SCD performed equivalently to those without SCD in single-event PM, but demonstrated greater decline on a habitual PM task. This demonstrates the importance of multi-method techniques to examine PM, and suggests habitual PM tasks may be more sensitive to the effects of SCD.
