Focusing on the emotional process: how do we manage ourselves ‘in the room’ as therapists?
Abstract
It’s easy for us as therapists to get in the way of our clients’ ability to access and work with their emotional process. How do we do this?, How do we know we are doing it? And what can we do about it? This presentation addresses the fluctuating awareness of our own complex emotional process as therapists and examines the impact this can have on our connection with clients and their progress in therapy.
Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) centres presence, empathy and collaboration as fundamental to supporting clients in connecting and working with difficult and often avoided emotions. By helping clients access the underlying emotional structures that perpetuate presenting difficulties, we can open up the possibility of a new and life changing experience for our clients. This takes courage on the part of the client, but also from us as therapists. This presentation invites you to take up the challenge?
