Neuroscience and attachment - Applications in psychotherapy practice across the lifespan.
Abstract
In the last 10 years, there has been a significant amount of scientific studies that have uncovered the interpersonal brain synchronization that occurs between the right hemisphere temporoparietal junction (RJT) of both the client and the therapist in the interpersonal space. The synchronization of neural activity (from right brain to right brain) occurs in similar patterns in infants, through the substrates of voice, gesture and facial expression. This then helps promote "synchronization" and interpersonal resonance/connection between 2 individuals. The synchronization of neural activity (from right brain to right brain) allows us to become "micro" observers of our clients (and our own) physiology and associated bodily changes. For example: changes in body position and posture, shifts in facial expressions, shifts in eye gaze and movement, eye closure, skin flushing, etc. These physiological responses are deeply interconnected to unconscious internal process that are at the core of emotional change. The clinical implications of this research is all indicative of the significance of the non-verbal unconscious connections that are made from the therapist to the client which are mimicking the unconscious dynamics of our earliest attachment relationships.
In this interactive style workshop, participants will learn about these recent developments in neuroscience in regards to attachment theory and right brain research. This will be explored in the context of the therapist/client relationship through right brain to right brain communications. After being introduced to these findings, participants will be able to understand the necessity and usefulness of working in the transference relationship, that is at the core of the therapeutic alliance. These learning's will generalize to all clients across the lifespan.
During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to become involved in role plays and demonstrations that will help them discover and utilize these micro-communications to enhance their case formulation skills and all other aspects of psychotherapy treatment. This enhances the capacity to "mentalize", which is a measure of the reflective capacity of the "other" i.e, the ability to understand people in terms of their internal experiences. Through live demonstrations, participants will also have the opportunity to experience these communications themselves, which will deepen and enhance their skill base in all therapeutic modalities. The usefulness and effectiveness of having face to face interactions with peers will enhance and deepen participants understanding and application of these theories in clinical practice. As a result, participants intuitive abilities will increase.
