How to protect yourself from the harmful impact of destructive leadership

1:55 PM - 2:15 PM

Promotional description

Most attendees at this conference will have experienced destructive leadership at some time during their career. For many no action was taken by the organisation to address the issue. So, at times it seems it is left up to us as individuals to find the best way to minimise the harm caused by toxic bosses. Typical coping mechanisms are not effective (i.e. working harder or trying to build a better relationship with the manager). The surprising truth is that avoidance-based coping (i.e. avoiding the boss, taking leave) can be adaptive, at least in the short term, to allow time to step back and develop continency plans and an exit strategy. Let me share with you three steps that are crucial to coping with destructive leadership and responding in a way that does not harm your wellbeing or your career.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this TEDx talk, attendees will be able to:
• Identify destructive leadership behaviours and their impact on individual targets
• Predict how individual targets are likely to react to destructive leadership behaviours
• Be able to leverage strategies that can assist individual targets to inhibit the urge to react in harmful ways
