When to “take control” of our time and energy, and when to “let it go".

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Promotional description

Self-regulation has long been considered important for learning and performing, but emerging theory and research suggests “letting go of control” may also have unique benefits for work-relevant outcomes. This presentation covers two streams of field research that highlight the potential benefits of these two contrasting forms of information processing. The first stream considers the dynamic patterns of team leader behavior most likely to facilitate effective team functioning in a sample of incident command teams performing in high fidelity simulations. The second stream considers the psychological consequences of different types of micro-breaks, and implications for recovery and creativity.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
• Understand the patterns of team leader behaviour expected to facilitate team functioning.
• Understand the expected psychological consequences of different types of micro-breaks and their expected implications for work-relevant outcomes.

Gillian Yeo is Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the University of Western Australia Business School. She is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology. She primarily examines self-regulation at work—that is, how individuals regulate their motivation, emotions and cognitions over time, in relation to learning, performance and well-being. She focuses on these concepts in relation to both individuals and team leaders, drawing on within-person/team theories and using experience sampling methodology in the laboratory and field. The outcomes of her research have informed training, performance management, and occupational health practices in a variety of work settings. She has published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology and Journal of Management.
