The interplay of job autonomy and self-efficacy in fostering future work-self flexibility.

12:05 PM - 12:25 PM

Promotional description

The research in this presentation uses data from one of the world’s longest running longitudinal study, the Raine Study. Based in Perth, the Raine Study has been running for 32 years, which provides a unique opportunity for you to learn adolescent personality and early work experiences interact to influence young adults’ work-related mindsets.
A flexible mindset about one’s future work is critical to have in current times, when the COVID-19 pandemic would have disrupted many young adults’ ability to progress their future work goals. People with a flexible ‘future work self’ are less likely to be self-critical and “roll with the punches” if their career trajectory does not exactly match what they had envisioned. In this study, we show how feeling confident to navigate new situations (a form of self-efficacy) in adolescence combined with experiencing high job autonomy in early adulthood fosters a flexible future work mindset.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1) understand the importance of good work design for learning and development, and be encouraged to think about how it applies to their own jobs or clients they work with. They will have the opportunity to analyse whether their own/their clients’ jobs provide opportunities to problem solve, generate ideas, learn etc?
2) Comprehend the concept of their future workself and analyze whether they are flexible towards their future work goals and aspirations. For example, has the pandemic necessitated the need to become more flexible towards one’s future work self?
3) Apply the concept of self-efficacy for navigating new experiences to their coaching clients or their own professional selves
4) Generate ideas to become more flexible in their future work selves

Learning outcomes are measured through interactive questions during the presentation. Adequate performance involves participating in interactive questions.
