Merging AI and psychology: Exploring the case of video interviewing in selection
8:30 AM - 10:00 AMPromotional description
AI and machine learning are impacting the work of IO psychologists. Problems traditionally solved by psychologists are being handed instead to data scientists, and psychologists are borrowing the data scientists’ tools for their own work. Perhaps the area most affected is employee selection, and the most visible evidence is the uptake of automatically scored video interviewing (AVI) – nominated by LinkedIn as a top hiring trend of 2018. In AVI, applicant videos are processed using machine learning to produce ratings of personality, skills, competencies, or other outcomes. Important questions surround AVI, such algorithmic bias and transparency, candidate reactions, and construct validity. This interactive Q&A session brings together leading psychologists in the field to explore these issues. The session is moderated by Dr. Matthew Neale, VP of Assessment at Criteria (formerly Revelian). Dr. Isaac Thompson is Principal Data Scientist at Modern Hire and host of the US-based Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's annual machine learning competition. Dr. Dave Meyers is IO Psychologist at video-interviewing firm Knockri where he works on transparent machine learning algorithms and bias. Dr. Patrick Dunlop is Associate Professor at Curtin University's Future of Work Institute and Associate Editor at the International Journal of Selection and Assessment.
Learning outcomes
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
Explain and describe how the fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are being applied in IO Psychology, using the case of automatically scored video interviews as a case example.
Understand how machine learning and artificial intelligence are used in automatically scored video interviewing, including the statistical methods used to derive scoring algorithms and the research designs used to validate those scoring algorithms.
Understand and evaluate the issues and challenges involved in using such technology, including algorithmic bias, questions of what (if anything) is being assessed (i.e. construct validity), adverse candidate reactions, and data privacy concerns.
Learning will be through actively engaging the audience in a question and answer format with experts in the field.

Merging AI and psychology: Exploring the case of video interviewing in selection
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM.....
I completed my Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology and PhD at UWA and am now an Associate Professor at the Future of Work Institute at Curtin University and a Registered Psychologist, endorsed in Organisational Psychology. My research interests lie in personnel recruitment, assessment, and selection in both paid and volunteer settings. I also study how these processes are unfolding in light of new technological and analytical developments, and what the implications are for the experiences of job candidates and recruiters.
