R for Organisational Researchers and Practitioners: A Gentle Introduction

10:15 AM - 1:15 PM

Promotional description

Data science is becoming ubiquitous within both organisations and academia. Open-source languages, such as R, are becoming increasingly popular, and they offer several advantages over established statistical packages, such as SPSS. First, they are completely free of charge, and do not have expensive licencing fees. Second, they enable users to be at the forefront of methodological techniques, as new and updated packages are constantly being released. They enable complex analyses and visualisations that cannot easily be reproduced in other packages. Third, they are supported by large communities of practice, which can offer advice and support. Finally, as all analyses are scripted, analyses performed in R support transparent and reproducible science. This workshop offers an introduction to R, providing participants with foundational knowledge that will enable them to engage in further self-directed learning.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop, students should be able to:
1. Prepare data by performing basic operations using R syntax
2. Perform data analyses and visualisations using R’s built-in analyses
3. Apply programming fundamentals to novel tasks
4. Engage in further self-directed study to build knowledge of R’s capabilities
