From case conceptualization to intervention – an in-conference Schema Therapy workshop

Outline

Case conceptualization is one of the most important, and often most neglected, steps in working with complex patients, such as those with personality disorders and other comorbid diagnoses. In Schema Therapy, case conceptualization provides a “blue-print” or “roadmap” to understand the patient’s problems in the context of a whole-person approach. A case conceptualization that is incomplete or inaccurate is one of the largest contributors to therapeutic impasses. When the case is correctly conceptualization, the obstacles in the therapist’s path, and the proper interventions for them, become clear, and the treatment can move forward.
In this workshop, Dr. Bernstein and Ms. Navot will ask three participants to present complex cases as a basis for making case conceptualizations, developing treatment strategies, and demonstrating interventions. For each case, they will create a “mode model” diagramming the patients’ schema modes, and use it as a basis for explaining his problems, and the emotional needs underlying them. Modes are a central concept in Schema Therapy, describing fluctuating emotional states that temporarily dominate the patient’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Schema Therapy focuses on ameliorating dysfunctional modes and strengthening healthy modes as a way of reducing harmful and promoting healthy forms of coping.
For each case, after making a mode model, Dr. Bernstein and Ms. Navot will use it to brain-storm possible interventions with the audience. Finally, they will demonstrate how to conduct one of the proposed interventions, asking the participant who presented the case to play the role of the patient in a live demonstration.
Participants who wish to present cases are asked to provide a brief summary of the case in advance to the conference organizers. The case summary should describe the patient’s background, diagnoses, and presenting problems, a short developmental history, and the main treatment challenges. Presenters do not need to have a Schema Therapy background to present a case for the workshop.
