Oral 01 | An efficient screener for depression

3:40 PM - 4:00 PM

Outline

This presentation introduces a new, efficient clinician-administered screening instrument for depression. The new screener lists the key questions to ask to distinguish whether the patient has typical reactive depression, melancholic depression, psychotic depression, or bipolar disorder, thus enabling the clinician to make an initial “most likely” diagnosis. Moreover, the new screener can be scored to meet either the DSM-5 or now-required ICD-10 criteria for depression. The screener takes up only one page or a single screen on a computer and is suitable for use by general practice physicians, clinical and counselling psychologists, and by psychiatrists in the initial patient interview.
