Outline

Within the context of widespread stigma, discrimination and marginalisation in society, gender diverse people appear to be four times more likely to have ever been diagnosed with depression, and 1.5 times more likely to have ever been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, than the general population. A recent national survey of 859 trans and gender diverse people aged 14-25 found that almost seven in ten had been subject to discrimination and almost one in six had experienced physical abuse because of their gender identity. Almost half had attempted suicide at some point. The same survey found that there are many trans young people who wish to access medical transition services within Australia but cannot.

Without affirmative practice training, psychologists and other clinicians are at risk of causing harm to transgender non-binary (TGNB) clients. This workshop aims to provide participants with awareness, knowledge and understanding in order to increase sensitivity when working with TGNB people. Topics covered will include inclusive language, the DSM 5 gender dysphoria diagnosis compared to the ICD 11 move from mental health to sexual health. Once understood, this will able to assist clinicians to determine how affirmative and inclusive their organisation or practice is, and areas in which to improve. This workshop will also include an introduction to requirements of treatment according to the Australian Professionals Association for Transgender Health and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health standards regarding various treatment options throughout the lifespan, from pre-puberty to different types of surgery.

Learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
• Have an increased sensitivity and understanding of language and terminology with gender diversity identity and expression.
• Recognise the diversity within the transgender umbrella.
• Assess your current clinical practice to determine how affirmative your practice is for transgender non-binary (TGNB) clients.
• Apply concepts of affirmative and inclusive clinical practice with TGNB clients.
• Prepare recommendations and letters for clients seeking hormone treatment and/or gender confirmation surgery.
