What is encryption, how does cryptocurrency work and what makes the darknet “dark”? In this presentation we explore these core pillars of technology enabled crime in an easy to understand and practical way. We focus on the history of cryptocurrency, its uses and users and include some interesting case studies. We explore the disruption effect that encryption has had on traditional evidence gathering methodology and the emergence of new types of offending by a new type of offender.

Dr Detective Senior Sergeant Debra Bennett is the Officer-In-Charge of Cold Case, Sex Crimes Squad, Victoria Police. She is also a full fellow of the International Criminal Investigative Analysis Fellowship, a group that provides FBI-approved advice and training to police regarding ambiguous motivations in serious and violent crimes. Deb has a doctorate in forensic and clinical psychology from Monash University and works part-time in private practice. She recently completed a Master of Clinical Family Therapy at the Bouverie Centre. Deb will be giving a case study that demonstrates the methodology of darknet drug vendors.
