Exploring autism: sexual offending and pornography
9:30 AM - 1:00 PMOverview
Whether working in criminal, family or civil law contexts, the way you formulate the behaviour of a person on the Autism Spectrum can be very different to that of the majority of your clients. Missing the identification of an underlying Autistic profile of an individual, or not realising how the formulation behind offending behaviour may differ from other offenders, can lead to incorrect risk ratings, ineffective interventions and missed opportunities for a fair process or appropriate sentencing through the justice system.
This presentation will explore the underlying characteristics of Autism and how the pathways to offending can differ across individuals. We will take a particular focus on social-sexual development in Autism and the role technology can play in sexual offending and internet offending (or victimisation) for these individuals.
Whether you’re assessing a situation of child exploitation material or rape, exploring the core areas of both strength and deficit in an individual’s Autism profile, such as reading the non-verbal cues of others, can have huge implications for formulation of behaviour as well as the underlying areas need for intervention focus.
