Personality disorder in correctional settings: delivering safe and effective services.
9:30 AM - 1:00 PMOverview
Personality disorder and highly problematic personality traits are very common in individuals within the criminal justice and forensic mental health services. This workshop will combine presentations with group work and skills practice to explore contemporary issues in working with those who have offended who present with personality difficulties. Drawing on research and practice, this workshop will consider three specific areas of work: 1) direct work with service users - individually and in groups; 2) psychologists providing case consultation to and delivering interventions indirectly through non-psychology staff, and 3) approaches to maintaining a healthy and productive workforce through the use of staff supervision and support. Specific issues relating to risk assessment and management; case formulation; gender and diversity, gaps in knowledge and evidence, and outcome measurement will be examined as they relate to the areas of work.
.....
My research and clinical work focuses on the application of psychology to clinical and forensic settings. Specifically, my current areas of research include personality disorder, offending behaviour, staff development and outcome measurement in practice. In addition to using standard quantitative and qualitative research designs I apply mixed methods (such as Q-sort) and small sample methods (e.g. single case experimental designs) to develop theory and understand change. I currently lead the evaluation of the All Wales Offender Personality Disorder Pathway delivered through the National Probation Service.
I am chartered as a clinical and forensic psychologist with the BPS and registered with the HCPC. I have worked as a clinician and service leader in a range of forensic settings including high, medium and low secure mental health settings, prison and with probation. I continue to work part time for the NHS as a Consultant Forensic and Clinical Psychologist.
